Was it real? Did my Korean chef idol Maangchi really come to Amsterdam and cook amazing Korean food with me? IT WAS GREAT! She’s even more awesome in real life, hilarious and full of energy. I’m so glad I got the opportunity to meet her and host the meet-up. Here’s Maangchi’s take on her trip to Amsterdam. And here are a few of my snapshots from the event. The actual cooking video will come out later after she’s back from her Gapshida travels.

It’s Maangchi Time!

Most of my friends and family are aware of my love of Korean food and my latest obsession with learning how to cook from my fav chef Maangchi. I discovered her cooking videos over a year ago when I got sick of not having access to any affordable Korean restaurants in the city and needed to feed my kimichi addiction. Since then, I’ve gotten a whole group of Amsterdammers hooked on Korean cuisine by throwing dinner parties with Maangchi recipes. Next month, my ultimate gastranomic dream is turning into reality because Maangchi is flying to Amsterdam and cooking on my houseboat! She has started a food show project where she is traveling around the world to cook and I’m lucky enough to be a part of her show. I’m so excited! There is nothing more romantic or refreshing than a weekend getaway in Amsterdam. The city offers everything from: stunning surroundings, legendary museums, (Van Gogh and Rembrandt) stylish bars and an overall feeling of serenity and peace. Unfortunately, the rain is also no stranger in this beautiful European city- it’s actually popping by quite often. Even though a little bit of rain never killed anyone, it is always good to find some nice, alternative activities to do indoor. After you spent your entire budget on museums, tours and of course shopping- it is time to do something free for a change. Amsterdam has a lot of nice café’s which not only offer relaxed and cozy atmosphere, it’s also provide free WIFI connection! Take a look at the top 5 Amsterdam- café’s with free WIFI access and enjoy surfing with a big cup of hot chocolate!

1. Bagels & Beans

The Bagel & Beans are famous for their delicious bagels and excellent cappuccinos. The combination of fresh food, huge coffee cups, (something which is not common is Amsterdam!) good service and central location makes this place truly addictive! Visit the address mentioned above, (please note that not all branches offer free WIFI) order one of their famous cream- cheese bagels and enjoy the rest of your rainy day!

2. Canvas

Even though it is a bit outside the center, Canvas café’/ bar/ night club- is totally worth visiting! Located on the 7th floor, you will be able to get a total overview of the beautiful city of Amsterdam. The place gets open every day from 11 in the morning, (12 o’clock on weekends) and closing time is only at 1 o’clock at night! On the weekends the Canvas turns into a trendy night club with smashing parties and beautiful people.

3. Casa Brazuca

The Casa Brazuca- (“Brazilian House” in Portuguese) is a nice, Brazilian café’ which is well-known for its happy- vibe and delicious meals. A quick look at the menu will prove to you that you got to the right place: fruit juices made from the most exotic fruits found in the Netherlands, fresh coffee, cassava cheese bread and many more treats. In between bite to bite try to remember the real reason why you came here: the free WIFI!

4. Night bar Amsterdam Café the bottle

Just few minutes from the famous Dam- square, in one of the liveliest alleys in the city, you will be able to find the famous “Café’ the bottle”. This typical Amsterdam bar is located inside a historic building which is more than 400 years old. The atmosphere in general is laidback, multicultural and mainly fun. You will meet there all kind of friendly people who will be happy to have a drink with you or to just let you be, while you are busy surfing the net.

5. Lungoccino Espresso bar

This coffee place is extremely popular with local Amsterdam people. If you happen to pass by during rush hours, (9 in the morning or 12 in the after-noon) you will see a long line of people waiting to get their favorite coffee. Lungoccino itself is a tiny café’ with not too much decoration, but it is cozy, intimate and serve the best coffee in town!

Roopram Roti Surinamese Food

Finally, some delicious and cheap food in Amsterdam! I know I just wrote about how bad the food is in this city but this place rules! Roopram is a Surinamese cafe located between Oosterpark and Dappermarkt. From what I can tell, Surinamese food is very similar to Indian cuisine. Lots of spicy meat and vegetarian dishes accompanied with roti. Prices range between 4 to 8 euros and the food is delicious. It is so popular among the Surinamese locals that there is almost always a huge line, sometimes coming out the door. The first time I tried t eat there I was turned away because they ran out of food! Don’t get discouraged by the line because they have very fast service. I’ve tried a few other Surinamese restaurants in the hood and this one is by far the tastiest.

Camera Japan Festival October 7-13

An art festival about Japan in Amsterdam?! The Camera Japan Festival is on it’s fifth year of celebrating everything Japanese. There will be feature films, dance, anime, food, music, documentaries, and exhibitions! It will be held from October 7-13 at the Melkweg and Kriterion.

Here’s what I’m excited about:

Lullatone, the amazing pajama pop band will perform a free show at the Kriterion, Friday October 8 at 21:00.

Feature Film: Noriben – The Recipe of Fortune, playing Saturday October 9 at 13:30 Kriterion.

Brunch & Movie! The feature film “Pool” or “Puru” will be screened alongside an oishii Japanese style brunch for only 10 euros! Sunday October 10 at 11:00, Kriterion.

What to do when food is no good

I have spent the last month in Berlin taking advantage of their cheap and tasty culinary establishments. I also went a little crazy eating out since this activity in Amsterdam almost always results in a disappointing experience. Sorry Amsterdam, I love you but your food SUCKS. It’s the truth. Entrees are extremely overpriced, the service is bad, and it can be difficult finding really lekker food. That said, I have had the opportunity this past year to really learn how to cook food that I crave since I can’t go out and find it in this city.

Here are two food blogs I love since they fulfill my spicy to extra spicy food cravings.

I love maangchi! I want her to be my Korean aunt who lives next door and feeds me everyday. I have already made Soondubu three times since discovering her site.

If you’re looking for Korean/Japanese ingredients, Shilla is the best! The mini grocery store is located just north of Amstelveen. They have everything and I think it is a bit more affordable than the stores on Zeedijk.

Homesick Texan is another really great food blog. I miss Texan meals all the time since I moved to Europe and she has some amazing Tex-Mex recipes and even Chicken Fried Steak for all you southerners!

SLAVE Sunday Supper Club Fun!

My lovely friend Andre has been hosting SLAVE at the Supper club every sunday for the past couple of months and they have been ALOT fun. If you love art, good food, dancing, and listening to great Djs, you will have a good time!

The evening program on May the 9th is Guest Curated by Heido Lobato, director of the Africa in the Picture Film Festival. She will be screening one of her favorite African shorts and provide you with a little preview of the upcoming 2010 Africa in the Picture festival.

Live performances by Lake Montgomery (singer songwriter); Born and raised in Paris Texas. Influenced and inspired by Nina Simone, Billy Holiday and Miriam Makeba and the countless old blues mammas that have kicked vocal ass in the past 100 years.

Spoken Word performance by Dutch MC Blaxtar; Blaxtar is a dutch rapper from Zwolle. He has been active in the dutch hiphop scene for 10 years already. In 2006 he released his first album “Ozmoses”. Followed by his second album “Chronozbaäl” in 2008 and most recently with his latest album OZMO6:2

Afterwards the Boogieman Crew will kick mad funk flavor and takes you on a ride across multiple genres, woven by Soulful vocals, lush piano chords, warm bass lines and boom-bap drum patterns.

SLAVE Party at Supperclub Tonight

I’m Posting this a little late but tonight the Supperclub and SLAVE will host a great program of arts, culture, music and food.

A place, a space for visual art, performance art, film, dance, spoken-word, poetry, presentations, talk shows, debates and social networking.

This Sunday SLAVE will be programmed by Marjolein Vogels from festival ‘Why not!’ in artspace W139 and the organisation Meisjes Zonder Smaak.

Signe Tollefsen and The Woodwards will be playing a set each. Video work by Film director Joris Hoebe: Gravity part 3 (dancemovie, 2009), Stort (artmovie, 2008). Contemporary dancer Eva Baumann will give you a glimpse of magic.
Doors open at 18:00. Program starts at 18:30
