The Colors of Amsterdam

Colour lovers is a site where designers and other color aficionados can create and search for interesting colors, palettes, and patterns. I started creating my own color palettes and decided to make a color palette for Amsterdam. Then I wondered what other people thought of Amsterdam in terms of color and discovered that people see all sorts of colors when they see Amsterdam!

My Amsterdam This is the way I see Amsterdam, green doors and green plants everywhere, gray blue skies, cream trimmings on houses, and bright and dark reds splashed throughout the city. Others see Amsterdam in a much more psychedelic or subdued way.

Six Months of Amsterdam

I can’t believe it has already been six months since I moved to Amsterdam. I’m half way through my Master’s program and I feel like I moved to this city a month ago! I came here in the heat and somehow have already managed through a whole month of snow.

The last six months far surpassed my expectations of living here in every way possible. I love Amsterdam just as much as I did when I studied abroad here 2 years ago, I have met some really amazing people, and I’m loving the whole experience of being a graduate student in this city. I came up with the concept of this blog in Texas back in July of 2009 and I am really happy with the amount of feedback and comments I have received. I never anticipated meeting or talking to new people because of my blog but it has been great! I can’t wait to see what Amsterdam will be like in 2010, especially riding around in Summer!

If you like electronic music this festival is for you. 5 days off! is an electronic music festival packed with 80 djs and live acts performing for 5 nights in Amsterdam’s Paradiso and Melkweg. The event will be held from March 3-7 but tickets are already on sale now.

Here are a few acts I am really excited about!

Hot Chip will be performing at Paradiso on Saturday March 6th.

The Bloody Beetroots will be performing after Hot Chip at the Paradiso on Saturday March 6th.

Fake Blood will be performing Thursday March 4th at the Melkweg.

Groove Armada will performing Sunday, March 7th at the Melkweg.

Lately, I have been making desktop wallpaper backgrounds for friends. Many of them have been Amsterdam related so I thought I would share them with you here. International Film Festival Rotterdam

Frozen Canals

Was this photograph taken decades ago in a pre-global warming era where people in Amsterdam could glide around the canals all winter long? Actually it was taken two days ago on Keizersgracht by William Bosveld. Amsterdam’s canals have frozen over for the first time in over a decade! Boats are banned from the frozen areas so people can enjoy the natural ice skating rinks. How nice!

If you are looking for something cozy to do in the bleak of winter and additionally experience possibly the best cinema experience of 2010, go to the Tuschinski Theater and see Avatar in 3D. Avatar is badass, Tuschinski is badass. It’s a win win situation.

Pathé Tuschinski is an Art Deco movie theater built in 1921 by Abraham Icek Tuschinski. The architecture and interior design is amazing. It feels like something out of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

If you haven’t heard of James Cameron’s latest flick you have probably been in a cave but here’s the trailer.

Avatar 3D is playing in several cinemas around town but I highly suggest you go and watch it at Tuschinski! The theatre has been selling out so I suggest ordering your tickets online.
