Was it real? Did my Korean chef idol Maangchi really come to Amsterdam and cook amazing Korean food with me? IT WAS GREAT! She’s even more awesome in real life, hilarious and full of energy. I’m so glad I got the opportunity to meet her and host the meet-up. Here’s Maangchi’s take on her trip to Amsterdam. And here are a few of my snapshots from the event. The actual cooking video will come out later after she’s back from her Gapshida travels.

Most of my friends and family are aware of my love of Korean food and my latest obsession with learning how to cook from my fav chef Maangchi. I discovered her cooking videos over a year ago when I got sick of not having access to any affordable Korean restaurants in the city and needed to feed my kimichi addiction. Since then, I’ve gotten a whole group of Amsterdammers hooked on Korean cuisine by throwing dinner parties with Maangchi recipes. Next month, my ultimate gastranomic dream is turning into reality because Maangchi is flying to Amsterdam and cooking on my houseboat! She has started a food show project where she is traveling around the world to cook and I’m lucky enough to be a part of her show. I’m so excited! Stay tuned, a cooking show with me and Maangchi out soon!

Roopram Roti Surinamese Food

Finally, some delicious and cheap food in Amsterdam! I know I just wrote about how bad the food is in this city but this place rules! Roopram is a Surinamese cafe located between Oosterpark and Dappermarkt. From what I can tell, Surinamese food is very similar to Indian cuisine. Lots of spicy meat and vegetarian dishes accompanied with roti. Prices range between 4 to 8 euros and the food is delicious. It is so popular among the Surinamese locals that there is almost always a huge line, sometimes coming out the door. The first time I tried t eat there I was turned away because they ran out of food! Don’t get discouraged by the line because they have very fast service. I’ve tried a few other Surinamese restaurants in the hood and this one is by far the tastiest.

Hours: Tues-Sat 14.00 -21.00, Sun 15.00-21.00, closed Mon.

SLAVE Party at Supperclub Tonight

I’m Posting this a little late but tonight the Supperclub and SLAVE will host a great program of arts, culture, music and food.

A place, a space for visual art, performance art, film, dance, spoken-word, poetry, presentations, talk shows, debates and social networking.

This Sunday SLAVE will be programmed by Marjolein Vogels from festival ‘Why not!’ in artspace W139 and the organisation Meisjes Zonder Smaak.

Signe Tollefsen and The Woodwards will be playing a set each. Video work by Film director Joris Hoebe: Gravity part 3 (dancemovie, 2009), Stort (artmovie, 2008). Contemporary dancer Eva Baumann will give you a glimpse of magic.
Doors open at 18:00. Program starts at 18:30

Restaurant Week

It’s restaurant week in Amsterdam! This city doesn’t seem to have a reputation of having good affordable food but this week, several participating high class restaurants are offering three-course dinners for 25 euros and three-course lunches for 20 euros. The deal goes on from now until Sunday March 7. Most restaurants are filling up quickly so make reservations ASAP. Here is a list of participating restaurants.

There is a God…The Taco Shop

It can be tough trying to find good affordable food in Amsterdam. But good affordable Mexican food? Yesssssssssssssssss. I had a feast at The Taco Shop last week in De Pijp. Tacos and Burritos range from 3 to 8 Euros and located at Tolstraat 200, 1074 VN Amsterdam.

Got the smothered chicken burrito. Not too shab for European-Mex food.
